Expert disputes hair restoration survey

Article-Expert disputes hair restoration survey

Boca Raton, Fla. — A Boca Raton hair-loss expert says results of a recent online survey do not begin to tell the story of how popular hair-restoration procedures have become, news source PRWeb.com reports.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of RealSelf.com, suggests that more women would rather have hair replacement than a Botox procedure, and that the former is the second-most-demanded cosmetic treatment for men.

Harris Interactive asked 2,227 adults what they would do to improve their appearance in 2010 if cost weren’t an issue. Among both male and female respondents, teeth-whitening is the most preferred treatment (at 55 percent and 51 percent, respectively), but the survey also found strong interest from both men and women for traditional hair transplant surgery.

According to the survey results, hair transplantation is the second-most-desired cosmetic treatment among men, while more women would rather have a hair transplant than a Botox treatment.

However, PRWeb.com reports that Alan J. Bauman, M.D., a board-certified hair-restoration surgeon, says the survey limited hair replacement options to traditional linear or strip-harvest transplants — and failed to offer other, noninvasive treatments as effective options.

“I’m not surprised that RealSelf.com’s new survey on cosmetic treatment preferences clearly showed there is a strong desire among both men and women for better hair through hair transplants,” PRWeb quotes Dr. Bauman as saying. “However, had the survey offered other widely available and noninvasive hair loss treatment options, like low-level laser therapy, finasteride, minoxidil and dutasteride, the percentages of interested men and women would have been even higher.”

According to Dr. Bauman, the survey also failed to mention a newly available type of hair transplant surgery called follicular unit extraction (FUE) using NeoGraft, which, he says, “is a considerably less-invasive hair transplant and requires little downtime for patients.”
