Tel Aviv, Israel — A Tel Aviv University researcher is developing software based on actual clinical data in hopes of giving cosmetic surgery patients a more accurate idea of what they will look like after their procedure is complete, Medical News Today reports.
Alex Bronstein, Ph.D., of the university’s department of electrical engineering, heads a team that has built a device that can generate an anatomically accurate, three-dimensional post-surgery image of a particular patient’s procedure. Current image prediction software only generates two-dimensional images.
According to Medical News Today, the invention could help patients avoid unexpected results while helping cosmetic surgeons determine the most favorable outcome for the patient.
Medical News Today quotes Dr. Bronstein as saying, “Our program is more like a virtual mirror. It gives surgeons and their patients a way to see a 3-D before-and-after image as though the patient has really undergone the operation.”
Developed with input from respected plastic surgeons around the world, the new device is currently under commercial development.
