Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam — There’s been a boom in demand for cosmetic surgery in Vietnam over the past few years — and along with it have come risks to those who seek cheaper procedures from unqualified practitioners.
Vietnamese news agency TuoitreNews.com reports that in southern Ho Chi Minh City alone, about 100,000 people — most of them women between ages 20 and 35 — are undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures. Breast augmentation, facelifts, rhinoplasty and liposuction are the most sought-after procedures.
According to TuoitreNews.com, prospective clients go to beauty salons for these procedures. At what the agency calls “authentic” beauty salons — those that house cosmetic surgeons — clients can consult with a doctor to learn about potential risks and complications. Ho Chi Minh City now has hundreds of beauty salons, only a few of which hold cosmetic surgery licenses, while most of the remainder are authorized for skincare and consultation only.
TuoitreNews.com reports that many Vietnamese “are still willing to risk their own lives to ‘upgrade’ their appearance by resorting to silicone, while the substance is banned in developed nations.”
