Article-Economy slows cosmetic procedures only slightly

Garden Grove, Calif. — The recession is having an effect on the number of cosmetic procedures done — but not much of one, HealthDay News reports.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, based here, nearly 10 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2009. That’s down just 2 percent from 2008.

Nonsurgical procedures — the most popular of which are Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA, Allergan) injections, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and chemical peels — accounted for 85 percent of the total. The remainder comprised surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty.

According to the society, 91 percent of all cosmetic procedures were done on women. Forty-four percent were done on people ages 35 to 50, and 27 percent on people ages 51 to 64.
