Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has warned women to beware of dubious standards in the country’s booming cosmetic surgery industry, as doctors often practice without a license, Bangkokpost.com reports.
Health officials here estimate that the number of cosmetic surgery procedures has doubled or even tripled in recent years, despite Cambodia’s sluggish economy. Prime Minister Hun Sen, however, says officials need to monitor lax standards more stringently and urged women to be careful when seeking cosmetic procedures.
Although cosmetic surgeons are required to register with the health ministry and have proper qualifications, officials say many operate without licenses and proper training.
Bangkokpost.com quotes the prime minister as saying, “The problem is whether or not (we) understand clearly the materials or chemical substances that are used for beauty surgery.”
