New York — The popularity of injectable aesthetic fillers and toxins will continue to increase in 2011 as products evolve and new players enter the U.S. market. That’s among the new year’s predictions from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
The society bases its forecasts on interviews with leading plastic surgeons around the country. Among its other predictions:
•Demand for facelifts and other facial rejuvenation surgeries will increase as the economy continues to recover. Nonsurgical procedures also will see some growth.
•Increasing awareness about the risks of obesity will lead to more patients seeking surgical body-contouring procedures following dramatic weight loss.
•Lipoplasty will continue to be the gold standard in fat reduction, but interest will continue in experimental noninvasive procedures such as freezing, zapping and lasering.
•Many baby boomer women with aging breast implants and/or breast ptosis will seek implant replacement or breast lifts.
The ASAPS also predicts that as consumers continue to seek bargains, there will be a rise in “discount injectables” being bought offshore and in cosmetic procedures being done by poorly trained — or untrained — practitioners.
