Baltimore — Johns Hopkins Medicine will become the second hospital in Baltimore to offer face transplant surgeries, following recent approval from the university’s institutional review board.
Fewer than two dozen face transplants have been performed globally, including the most extensive procedure ever performed, conducted in March at the nearby University of Maryland Medical Center. In June, UCLA Health System in Los Angeles launched a face transplantation program, seeking patients for a clinical trial.
Face transplants at Johns Hopkins can be conducted only with approval from the institutional review board, according a news release.
“Facial transplants have the potential to transform the lives of people with severe facial injuries, and we are privileged to have the opportunity to care for them,” said W.P. Andrew Lee, M.D., director of Johns Hopkins Medicine’s department of plastic and reconstructive surgery, in a statement. “We will now begin to recruit and screen appropriate candidates for surgery.”
