Cambridge, Mass. — Researchers here report Facial Assessment by Computer Evaluation (FACE) software serves as a useful clinical tool for zonal facial movement analysis in comprehensive facial nerve rehabilitation programs.
Tessa A. Hadlock, M.D., of Harvard Medical School, and Luke S. Urban, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, conducted facial movement analyses on 50 individuals using both FACE and Photoshop-based measurements. Facial measurements were matched using FACE software and Photoshop-based measures at rest and during expressions.
The researchers compared the measurements of individuals with normal facial animation and patients with paralysis to gauge sensitivity to abnormal movements.
According to the study abstract, the FACE automated assessments required significantly less time than Photoshop-based assessments. FACE measurements easily revealed differences between individuals with normal facial animation and patients with facial paralysis. Researchers found FACE software produces accurate measurements of facial landmarks and facial movements and is sensitive to paralysis.
The study was published in Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
