Short-term use of a topical anti-aging formulation of cycloastragenol, growth factors, peptides and antioxidants showed significant and positive results in a study of 20 adults with moderate photoaging in a 12-week open-label study, published in the September 2014 Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
Twenty people, ages 35 to 75, were instructed to use the following skincare regimen only: the test product, Regeneration Booster (Jan Marini Skin Research, San Jose, Calif.); Age Intervention Gentle Cleanser; and Antioxidant Daily Fact Protectant SPF 33 (both by Jan Marini Skin Research). Researchers assessed results through patient self-assessment surveys at the study start, then again at 14, 30, 60 and 90 days. The surveys allowed patients to grade fine line and wrinkle appearance, texture, pore size, skin clarity and uniformity, elasticity, erythema, hydration and overall skin quality.
Study Findings
Eighteen people completed the study.
By day 90, 89 percent of patients reported improvements in wrinkles, elasticity and skin clarity/color uniformity; 83 percent said skin texture improved from baseline; 78 percent reported improved pore size and hydration; and 94 percent said their overall skin quality improved.
The lowest rate of improvement was 50 percent for erythema at 90 days. Improvement was significant after 14 days in all categories but erythema.
None of the patients reported sensitivity or irritation.
The researchers noted photographs revealed the greatest areas of improvement in texture and lines on the cheeks and around the eyes.
Putting the information to practice
Researchers concluded Regeneration Booster is a safe, effective anti-aging topical, offering rapid results without side effects.
Study author Robert Weiss, M.D., a dermatologist in Baltimore, Md., and president-elect of American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, who has no financial ties to the product or company, commented on how he uses the product in practice.
"We use the Booster product as an adjunct to antioxidants and retinoids. 'Booster' does exactly what the name implies—boosts the effect of a comprehensive anti-aging and post-laser maintenance skincare regimen. The product adds an extra dimension of textural smoothness which was captured in the study," Dr. Weiss told Dermatology Times.
