The versatile, dual-wavelength, no-consumables ADVATx laser system from Advalight (Copenhagen, Denmark) is appropriately gentle and able to provide year-round therapy, which is an advantage generally not associated with a laser platform.
Jason Emer, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist and director of Emerage Cosmetics (Beverly Hills, Calif.), explained, “I would break it into a few different aspects, and each is an advantage. You can treat year-round, which encourages consistency in either maintenance treatments or direct correction of the signs of aging. We cannot expect a course of treatment to never overlap sunny times of the year. You can treat skin of people who actively tan, which there are many of in some geographical regions.
“But moreover, if careful, you can treat more patients who may otherwise be sensitive because of a medical condition or medication,” he continued. “For example, we traditionally avoided treating patients with lasers who are undergoing acne therapy with isotretinoin; new studies have shed more light on that in recent years but we still exercise caution. With ADVATx we can treat them much more readily, which also improves recovery, acne clearance and healing. ADVATx treatment every two to four weeks may mitigate the potential for future scarring by enhancing recovery, so in our practice it has become the standard.”
ADVATx offers 589 nm and 1319 nm laser wavelengths, usable individually or together (known as PulSync Technology). Ideal for pigment and vascularity, the 589 nm beam is created by passing a 1319 nm beam through a YAG crystal, combining it with a second beam and passing that through a Q-switch, then a non-linear LBO crystal. With water as its chromophore, the 1319 nm laser promotes neocollagenesis. Tandem emitters allow onthe-fly modulation of settings without changing handpieces. The device itself weighs less than 200 pounds and runs on standard 120 V power, with an intuitive GUI that is easy to use and learn. According to Dr. Emer, the unique delivery of these wavelengths is what makes year-round treatment possible. “The 589 nm wavelength targets the vascular component, and the 1319 nm is more non-ablative resurfacing via controlled, cumulative energy buildup,” he began. “Also, we are targeting deeper tissue or deeper structures. There is no visual side effect seen from treatment. People leave without swelling, redness or peeling, and no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Also, you can treat all skin types as well as sensitive areas such as the neck and chest, which are normally associated with longer downtimes. So, a lot of the laser issues you might see with either a non-ablative or vascular laser, we do not see with ADVATx.” 
Dr. Emer shared that these qualities make ADVATx a great combination with potentially more aggressive therapies, even other lasers that will give a bit of downtime. “Again, you need to be sensitive to the patient needs and what it is you are doing, but the nature of ADVATx treatment make it a great companion to more aggressive therapies because it will not exacerbate the aspects that give those treatments higher downtime,” he continued. “Gentle and effective is becoming more possible so it is becoming more popular. This adds to the overall utility of ADVATx.”
