Jason Emer, MD, a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based board certified dermatologist loves the versatility of the HALO’s laser technology from Sciton (Palo Alto, Calif.). Considered a game-changer in the resurfacing category when it came out in 2014, Dr. Emer continues to be impressed with the consistent results delivered by this highly in-demand treatment. “HALO is probably the most advanced resurfacing device on the market now,” he said.

“The thing about HALO is it is a very unique device,” Dr. Emer noted. “It is one of the only devices that has a hybrid fusion technology capable of delivering two synergistic wavelengths. You can go deeper or treat more superficially to specifically address each patient’s skin concern from wrinkles and fine lines to acne scars, sun damage, pore size reduction and discoloration in one to two treatments.”
Sciton’s HALO uses 2940 nm Er:YAG to deliver pure ablation between 20 to 100 microns into the epidermis and a 1470 nm diode to deliver coagulation tunable between 250 and 700 microns into the dermis. As a result, aesthetic practitioners like Dr. Emer enjoy the flexibility that HALO offers. Both the ablative and non-ablative laser wavelengths can be delivered in the same pass, and many permutations of depths and density coverage are possible. The clinical effect is ablative-like results with close to non-ablative-like healing.
That is what patients, especially those in the mid-30s and older who are witnessing signs of aging from sun damage to wrinkling, want: impressive results without the downtime of traditional, more aggressive laser treatments.
“You can pretty much treat all skin types too,” Dr. Emer added. “Because HALO has two wavelengths you can customize the energies, making each wavelength less energy but cumulative to treat a darker skin type and get a nice result.”
Dr. Emer uses HALO mainly for resurfacing of areas on the face, neck, back, chest and hands. He said it is extremely effective in treating acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, general discoloration from sun damage, and for overall facial revitalization.
In most cases, patients have three or four days of downtime post-treatment and a pre- and post-treatment skincare regimen can help skin healing and preserve the longevity of results. In his practice, Dr. Emer uses his Aerify Complexion Revival Peeling Kit, which helps reduce uneven skin tone, dark spots, acne scars and sun damage, which further improves the results from laser and light treatments.
HALO is part of Sciton’s JOULE platform, which allows Dr. Emer to combine HALO treatments with options such as BroadBand Light (BBL) and SkinTyte.
“If you are going to invest in a technology, you want it to be able to do a diverse number of things. If you have the JOULE you are basically able to treat everything,” he said. “You can treat blood vessels, you can treat sun damage, you can do resurfacing.
“You also want a company that is sup- portive and Sciton is extremely supportive,” he continued. “They host user summits, trainings and webinars all the time. It is a complex device with updated technologies and Sciton is there to support you, where a lot of companies are not.”
